* Chronic disease occurs in children.
* For example, Asthma afflicts about 10% of children annually.
* Type II diabetes is becoming more common.
* Obesity in children sets the stage for early heart disease and diabetes.
Children have chronic disease – sad but true.
They can have diseases in all the major adult chronic disease catagories including: heart disease, cancer, and diabetes.
My approach to them is the same – control the current disease and control their risk for new chronic disease.
Compared to adults, we get an earlier start on both goals in kids.
And, kids are seldom the decision makers on key risk factors (nutrition, physical activity, smoke exposure).
That means we can enlist their parents and guardians in attacking these risk factors.
This ‘team’ is in a very powerful position to put each child on a healthy course for life.
